At the entrance you are surprised by the two corridors for whites and not whites!!! We were a group and did the tour with a French speaking guide. Fortunately because all the information is only in English. It is not possible to take pictures inside. Our visit lasted three 3 hours because we had other visits to make but you can spend a morning in this museum because it is so large and rich in history. Read more Review of: Apartheid Museum Visited March 2026 Traveled with friends Written April 5, 2026 Chilliflakes3 London, United Kingdom 36 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles Lebo was a thoughtful, informative and stimulating guide both on our way through Johannesburg and as we went round the Apartheid Museum itself. This is a brilliant museum but could be quite daunting. He was very good at picking out key elements while encouraging us to explore further the areas we wanted to in more detail. He and the company were responsive to our requests and were helpful when we needed to make changes to our initial booking. Our tour was good value for money and we can recommend it highly. Read more Review of: Apartheid Museum Visited October 2025 Traveled as a couple Written October 26, 2025 Boppie 732 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles We visited the Apartheid Museum for about 3.5 hours today on our own. We took an Uber door-to-door to/from our Jo-burg Hotel, rather than include the museum as part of a group tour. The area is safe, admission is reasonable (has a seniors admission price as a bonus), and the genesis and history of apartheid is well-explained. There is a nice museum shop and cafe in-site. Our only criticism is that the “flow” of exhibits is somewhat disappointing, making it hard to follow the history and—especially the timeline—of apartheid. There is a free App that you should download, which is somewhat helpful, but the numbered topics in the App videos often did not correspond to the numbers on the exhibits. The App seems to need updating. All in all, this is a great place to learn about apartheid, despite the need for updating the presentation/flow of exhibits and the App. Read more Review of: Apartheid Museum Visited September 2025 Traveled as a couple Written September 11, 2025 R Young London, United Kingdom 105 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles This museum addresses apartheid with such frankness, sincerity and emotion through both the permanent exhibition and also the temp exhibition on Mandela. We ended up spending 3 hours (and could have spent longer).I would recommend that if you’re in Jo’berg, this is a must-visit place. When our guesthouse host told us that we could easily spend 4 hours at this museum, we thought he was exaggerating. He wasn’t. We spent 90 minutes in the temporary Nelson Mandela exhibit alone. The building is of high architectural merit and the contents are perfectly curated. It was an intense experience, but a must see. It is housed over a large area that has uneven terrain, stairs and fair bit of walking. Parts of it are on open ground and advisable to wear hats and sunscreen. A must see place for tourists to Johannesburg. Allow for about 2 hours to see the place. Entry fees payable. On site there’s a lovely restaurant, shop, and toilets. Go early to avoid the heat and crowds. It really covered the horrors of what happened during apartheid. Some of the exhibits were hard to read about and go through. It’s sad that it was not that long ago this happened. These same things are continuing to happen around the world on smaller scales. I loved the Nelson Mandela exhibit. We had a guide take us through, so we did not get to go through at our own pace. But we did get to see the main points and areas. When I go back, I would just go through on my own to see the sections I missed. From the initial entry that sets you in apartheid South Africa to the sobering and inspiring exhibits of great leaders such as “Mr. Mandela,” one is transformed by this special place. Key is not being in a hurry and just absorbing all of the lessons and pain that emerges from the visit. That belief was completely shattered the day I visited the Apartheid Museum in South Africa—or at least, the version of the museum I experienced. From the moment I arrived, something felt wrong. The staff at the entrance barely acknowledged me. While other visitors were welcomed with smiles and explanations, I was waved through impatiently, as if my presence was an inconvenience. When I asked a simple question about where to start the exhibition, one employee rolled their eyes and told me to “figure it out myself.” Inside the museum, things only got worse. I was repeatedly stopped by guards who demanded to see my ticket, even though they ignored other visitors walking past me. At one point, a guard accused me of standing too close to an exhibit and spoke to me harshly, raising his voice in front of a crowd. I felt humiliated, especially since I had followed all the rules posted on the wall. The most disturbing moment came during one of the exhibitions that described the cruelty and injustice of apartheid. I tried to take my time, reading the stories and reflecting on the suffering of millions. Suddenly, a staff member told me I was “moving too slowly” and ordered me to keep walking. It felt deeply ironic to be rushed and disrespected in a place meant to teach empathy, dignity, and human rights. Later, when I attempted to write a short note in the visitor reflection area, another employee told me I wasn’t allowed to use the space, even though others were doing exactly the same thing. No explanation was given. Just a sharp command to leave. By the time I exited the museum, I felt angry, confused, and disappointed. I had come hoping to learn about history and leave with a deeper understanding of justice and equality. Instead, I left feeling small and unwelcome, as if my experience didn’t matter at all. The worst part wasn’t just the poor treatment—it was the contradiction. A museum dedicated to exposing discrimination and cruelty somehow became the place where I felt those very things firsthand. It was an experience I will never forget, and not for the reasons a museum visit should be remembered.
