The annoying people who force you to ride horses and camels aren’t there at the door anymore! They used to be a great disappointment for tourists. Now they have organised hop on hop off buses that keep running around. Plenty of clean and nice cafes are scattered at every bus stop. I would say this is the only time that I really enjoyed visiting the pyramids with my family. Great improvement!!! The landscape is spectacular, almost fairy-tale-like, and standing in front of these monuments makes one feel small in the face of history. Perhaps the area could be maintained a bit better, but this does not take away from the charm of the place. We chose to take a tour of the pyramids on the back of a dromedary, paying only €10 per person: a suggestive and fun experience that I absolutely recommend. For a moment, it really feels like entering an ancient tale, or a scene from a nativity, immersed between the desert and the pyramids. No matter how many photos you’ve seen, nothing quite prepares you for standing beside these massive breasts that have been there for more than 4,500 years. They are every bit as impressive, and iconic as you’d imagine. A few tips: if you’re planning on getting your photo on a camel on front of the pyramids, negotiate the price for your photos before you get on the camel. Trust me on this one. Another surprise was that for an additional 1,600 Egyptian pounds, you can actually go inside the Great Pyramid. Nobody told me that in advance! I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. The experience involves crouching through a series of narrow tunnels and passageways before reaching the interior chamber. It’s fascinating, but if you’re even slightly claustrophobic, think hard before buying the ticket. We visited in June, and while it was brutally hot, the crowds were much smaller than I expected. I had braced myself for wall-to-wall tourists and constant harassment from vendors. In reality, neither was nearly as bad as I’d been led to believe. Vendors were present, of course, but almost polite. And then there’s the Sphinx. Everyone talks about the face, but nobody mentions the tail. The tail is surprisingly long and remarkably well preserved. Apparently I am now the sort of person who travels halfway around the world and comes home talking about an ancient limestone tail. The Pyramids were not just a bucket-list destination for me. They are one of the few places on Earth that genuinely feel connected to deep human history. Go. Bring water. Bring a hat. Consider going inside three big pyramid. And don’t forget to admire the Sphinx’s tail.
