Very informative and moving to hear the first hand stories from guides who were captive and brutally treated when inmates here. A trip not to be missed when visiting Cape Town. Shammers 41 contributions 0 4 of 5 bubbles Insightful tour but communication overall could be better Mar 2026 • Couples Booked an 11am ferry with tour the other end – we were collected by a former prisoner for bus tour of the island. Super uncomfortable bus and while it was insightful to hear about his experiences and life on the island, the whole first part of the tour lasted too long and was not as interesting as the second, where a different gentleman took us around the actual prison, its different sections, told us about life as a prisoner, who was here and why… he delivered a well paced and interesting tour and gave us enough time to take in the space, too. This second part was definitely the highlight. Negatives: unclear instructions on timings and bad communication from ferry staff in general, nobody mentioned there was nowhere to buy any water (or food) other than at the first stop and the fact that the ferry only took half the bus and in effect left us there, waiting, was not good. Choppy ride back but we (almost) got to see some wales. Worth the visit but come prepared with snacks and water and ask questions around timing! Kamlesh Boodhoo Vacoas-Phoenix 142 contributions 0 5 of 5 bubbles Echoes of Resilience: Robben Island Apr 2026 • Solo Robben Island Museum is a site not to be missed for those who are in Cape Town. The ferry ride from Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront across Table Bay set the tone — chilly winds and views of the city shrinking behind us. Upon landing on **Robben Island**, a former maximum-security prison and UNESCO World Heritage Site, we boarded a bus for a tour of the island’s stark landscape, passing the old lime quarry where prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, endured years of backbreaking labor under the harsh sun. The most powerful part was the walking tour inside the prison, led by a former political prisoner. His calm, firsthand stories brought the harsh reality to life: tiny cells, crowded communal blocks, and the isolation that defined life here for thousands of anti-apartheid activists. Standing before **Nelson Mandela’s small cell** — barely big enough for a bed and a bucket — was profoundly moving, a stark symbol of resilience and the long fight for freedom. The visit was somber yet inspiring, a raw reminder of South Africa’s painful history and the triumph of the human spirit. Though the tour felt somewhat rushed at times, it left a deep, lasting impression. A must-do for anyone seeking to understand the country’s journey to democracy. What a humbling place with so many stories and a rich history. The boat over was well organised. The tours of the island and museum were so interesting. But book direct rather than with a tour company – it’s half the price and you get exactly the same tour. Ashleys Travel Adventures Nairobi, Kenya 129 contributions 0 5 of 5 bubbles History visit – Robben Island Capetown Feb 2026 • Friends Nelson Mandela has always been one of the most popular leaders in Africa, leading South Africa to independence. His story has been one of resilience, and visiting Robben Island was a must-see. We booked our tickets online and had to carry passports for identification. The visit includes a 30-minute ferry trip to and from the island. You board the ferry at the V&A. Pro tip – carry some snacks and water with you. The ferry was pretty smooth, and the whole experience was four hours. The weather was pretty chilly, not too hot, not too cold. On arrival on the Island, we got into buses and went to our first stop in the prisons, where we had a talk from Oliver, who was once a prisoner there. He gave us a lot of insight, and after that, we went to see Nelson’s prison cell and the court where he spent his time. The island is pretty deserted, and you get around by bus with a guided tour guide in the bus. We made a little stop where we saw some penguins. The staff was very helpful in making sure we were where we needed to be and boarded on time. The fee was 600 R per non-South African adult. The experience is best for anyone interested in history, and you can go with kids, friends, and family. In my pictures, you will see: a courtyard with flowers planted by Nelson Mandela and the same garden he used to hide the script of his famous speech, Nelson’s cell, and the island environs. The boats were comfortable enough and afforded some excellent views of Cape Town and Table Mountain. The 2x tours of Robben Island are efficient and the guides were good, especially Terrence, thanks, Terrence! Visiting was useful to understanding apartheid and South Africa, it’s sad and upsetting at times but I would say it is an essential part of visiting Cape Town! Nice to see the Penguins too! I’ve traveled to this incredible city for decades to see family friends. Whether it’s for a wedding or just to re-up my rooibos tea supply, I can never turn down the chance for a visit. There’s just something about having easy access to stunning mountain hikes, one-of-a-kind artisan goods, breezy beach walks, world-class wine, and jaw-dropping sunsets. It’s my Goldilocks city, not too big, not too small, but just right. It’s what made me fall in love with the city when I came here at 16. And since then, I’ve come back time and time again for another dose of magic.
