Everyone gets put onto a hot, cramped bus where you cannot see anything if you are seated in the aisle. Oct 2025 • Friends Cramped, hot overpriced bus tour where you cannot see a thing. The tour should allow you to see the entire island including warden areas, hospitals, schools and churches. The buses used for this tour is not appropriate for viewing purposes. When you have the Indian and Atlantic oceans colliding, it makes for very, very choppy water. On the 45 minute ferry ride those sensitive to motion sickness sat stoically while the colour drained from their faces. The crew were handing out barf bags like party favours and they were put to good use by many. Robben Island has had a variety of incarnations over the years including being a leper colony and military base, but most famously, a prison for political prisoners — including Nelson Mandela. It is now a tourist attraction and tours are hosted by former political prisoners who bring a realism based upon their own personal experiences. The cell pictured is Nelson Mandela’s where he spent 18 of his 27 years in various prisons. It had no running water or toilet. He, like others, did not have the luxury of a door or glass window in his cell; they were installed much later. In addition to other inhumane treatments, prisoners were constantly exposed to the often extreme weather fluctuations. There are too many examples of the unimaginable ways people can mistreat others, so suffice it to say that just when you think human depravity can’t possibly get any worse you hear the details that prove it most definitely can. Despite this, there is resiliency in the human spirit that cannot ultimately be repressed. Happy that we visited early in our stay as so much about Cape Town and South Africa relate to Nelson Mandela and his imprisonment. The prison experience and facilities, including a walking tour by a former inmate, are well-presented and hard-hitting. Probably not for younger kids. It’s easy to do this trip on your own; it’s a waste of money to do it through a tour company. Just Uber to the Robben Island ferry terminal at the V&A Waterfront, buy a ticket, and go. The ferry rides over and back are nearly an hour each direction (varies); so plan on the total outing to take at least four hours, likely a bit more. They were both outstanding and brought real insight to the experience. We were visiting from Australia and had only one possible day to do this tour, as the island had been closed for winter maintenance. On arrival, the receptionist was standing outside advising that the 9 a.m. trip was cancelled due to a ferry issue. There was very little opportunity to rebook for the same day. The manager had apparently known about the issue the night before but had made no contingency plans and didn’t arrive early to manage the crowd or answer questions. Fortunately, a tour group with some very persistent guides insisted something be done. Eventually, the manager organised an alternate boat (in a harbour full of them) and two trips were run at 11 a.m. — but only after many disappointed visitors had already left. I was lucky to follow that tour group in the queue and managed to rebook. The island itself is a deeply important part of South Africa’s history, but it deserves a management team far better equipped to handle disruptions, communication, and continuity. We were relieved to get there in the end, but it wasn’t the experience — or the day — we expected or paid for. The positive was the tour with an ex convict and hearing his story. The rest was chaotic. They put you on a boat with little or explanation of what happens. Once you arrive at the island if you are lucky or ask they point you at a bus. People went on different directions buses and boats and the whole thing seemed disorganised. We had high expectations of our trip to Robbin island. Right from the outset it was poor. The standard of the ferry was dreadful, the fumes were so bad, several people were sick. On arrival at the island you board a coach which was falling apart! We had a guide who seemed to think he was a comedian + we all needed entertaining! We were driven for a short period with very little input of information about the actual buildings we passed or anything meaningful about the island. The final stop was to the prison where we were greeted by a guide who to be fair told us about his experiences of being a prisoner on the island. He seemed very authentic.+ his story was fairly powerful. However we ended the trip with little time to visit the garden + just rushed past the actual prison Mandela spent his time in. In case of bad weather it can be cancelled but a refund of the ticket is guaranteed if a reservation was made (which is strongly recommended, otherwise the risk of not finding a seat is quite high). Arrived on the island they will take you on a tour with stops to significant places and then you stop and do a walk in the prisons, where you can see Nelson Mandela’s cell. The place is obviously highly symbolic, but the visit is made even more touching by the fact that there will be an ex-convict and an ex-guide to accompany you. The ferry trip was untimely and the ferry has little visibility – and you are not allowed on deck during the trip. But the view (if you can catch it) of Table Mountain and the island is unbeatable. The bus ride in the narrow coach is dutifully completed – with a short stop without getting off at various “highlights” of the island (sometimes barely visible depending on the seat side) – but with useful commentary.
