Full of shops and restaurants, a bit touristy but a beautiful location with a backdrop of Table Mountain. Of all the shopping, the Time Out Market is full of interesting things to buy. There are sea lions galore and a swing bridge to let boats in and out of the harbour, so there is always something to see. It’s a vibrant hub for shopping, dining and entertainment and boasts a beautiful marina. It’s especially recommended in the evening, as the atmosphere is particularly lovely and there’s plenty of outdoor seating. We also highly recommend a boat tour along the coast with views of Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, and Cape Town Stadium. The V&A is considered one of the safest areas in Cape Town due to its strong security presence. We stayed at a hotel in Bantry Bay, from where it was easily and safely accessible in just a few minutes by Uber. Deborah C 1 contribution 0 3 of 5 bubbles Upgrade needed to justify the price Apr 2026 The V & A Hotel certainly makes a strong first impression. The buildings are beautiful and ideally situated, with Table Mountain providing a stunning natural backdrop that’s hard to beat. The location alone gives the hotel a sense of charm and appeal that draws you in right away. However, the experience doesn’t quite live up to the price point. For what is charged per room, the amenities and overall room quality fall short of what you would expect from a 4-star establishment. Small but important details were overlooked — for example, a broken soap rack in the bathroom and visible black mold on the shower floor, which is simply unacceptable at this level. The towels were another disappointment. They had frayed edges and felt more like something you’d use to mop up water from the floor rather than what you’d expect in a hotel of this caliber. The shower itself was also problematic, with water pressure so weak it barely trickled out. Washing one’s hair became a challenge, to the point where using a glass to rinse was necessary. Service was inconsistent. The staff on the third floor came across as moody and unwelcoming, which detracted from the overall experience. That said, the breakfast team and reception staff were a highlight — friendly, helpful, and professional, helping to balance out some of the negatives. There are several other areas that could be mentioned that simply don’t meet 4-star standards. Overall, while the setting is exceptional, the hotel is in clear need of upgrades and better maintenance to justify the prices being charged per night. I’ve traveled to this incredible city for decades to see family friends. Whether it’s for a wedding or just to re-up my rooibos tea supply, I can never turn down the chance for a visit. There’s just something about having easy access to stunning mountain hikes, one-of-a-kind artisan goods, breezy beach walks, world-class wine, and jaw-dropping sunsets. It’s what made me fall in love with the city when I came here at 16. And since then, I’ve come back time and time again for another dose of magic.
