For over 20 years, our unmatchable steakhouse has been as much a part of SA culture as sunshine, red wine and red meat. You could say it is a landmark on the culinary landscape (and we’re now in Cape Town and the Middle East). We started with the kudu and springbuck appetizers — such a treat and a fantastic way to experience local game. Both were beautifully prepared and full of flavour. The ribs were outstanding. For mains, I had the sea bass with lemon butter sauce, which was perfectly cooked and deliciously light. The setting is casual yet warm, making it ideal for a relaxed evening out while still feeling special. Great atmosphere, excellent food, and a wonderful spot in Joburg. Would definitely return! Not only did she help us choose the steaks, she was always on hand when the wine was to be poured in the glass.But the very best came to the end:We were helpless to order Uber back to the hotel because we had no internet on the Iphon.She helped out, and for safety reasons accompanied us in addition to the waiting Uber.We were advised against the taxi.Without the “guardian angel” Catherina we probably wouldn’t have a nice memory of Johnsburg.A service that went far beyond the usual. Sep 2025 • Family I have always enjoyed visiting The Butcher Shop & Grill on Sandton Square whenever I am in Johannesburg, but unfortunately, my recent experience was very disappointing. The quality and standards have declined noticeably. Three steaks had to be returned as they were served blue instead of medium-rare, which was unacceptable for a restaurant of this caliber. Additionally, the napkin provided for the wine container was stained, which further detracted from the overall dining experience. Regrettably, based on this visit, I do not see myself returning. The environment was great, and the service was mostly excellent our waiter was super fast with food and drinks. I ordered a Wagyu steak and my family had other steaks, and the Butcher man cut our meat to perfection. I enjoyed my steak iso much that I even bought another one for takeaway, The only downside was the lady at reception, who was very rude to my mother However our waiter sorted it out promptly. The food was brought to us with minimal effort. We ordered two medium rump steaks one with sweet potato and one with mash and gravy, didn’t even look appealing. I cannot fault the steak it was cooked very well. The place didn’t seem warm and welcoming and was very quiet compared to Trumps across them who were very busy. We decided to give them a chance. We also ordered the Créme Brulee which was ok. Our bill came to around R872 for two of us we tipped Steven the waiter R150 and he didn’t seem happy nor did he thank us. Will not be going back there unfortunately. The staff were very friendly and the food was served quickly. My husband had a combination platter of rump Sirloin and fillet steak with a garlic sauce, and I had catch of the day (African sea bass) with lemon sauce. Both had baked potatoes.The steak was ok but nothing special and the garlic sauce was tasteless. The fish was extremely greasy. The best part of the meal was the potato. The meal cost R879.
