I was attracted by very strange noise a small animal in the farm area when I noticed that something just happend there ! It was a brand new born goat which just came out and was just lying in the corner of a wall, his mama goat looking at the baby very curious… Suddenly, the mama started to push again and another baby goat was coming to life right under our eyes, with several visitors watching the scene. Our favourite were the giant tortoises. For just over £1 you could purchase food and feed them. In addition, for an entry fee of 20€ the park is small and several activities such as feeding turtles are subject to a fee (you pay for the branch you give because it is free to go see turtles). The whole park is relatively small. The animals are all kept in small enclosures. The highlight is the area of the turtles, where you can go directly into the enclosure and feed and pet the animals. Reisende Swiss Alps, Switzerland 570 contributions 0 3 of 5 bubbles Urgent need for improvement in several areas of animal husbandry Dec 2025 • Couples In our view, clearly problematic in terms of animal welfare We have already visited many animal parks on several islands in the Indian Ocean and also seen very large groups of giant turtles. However, this park has disappointed us overall and in some cases really affected us. The lemur enclosure has been particularly negatively noticed. It was small, barely planted and offered no retreat whatsoever. Lemurs are pronounced tree dwellers with high demands on structure, height and vegetation. Instead, ALL animals sat apathetically on the ground. It lacked tall trees, dense plants, climbing structures and sheltered resting places completely. The animals seemed sad, underwhelmed and stressed. In our view, such an enclosure is completely unsuitable for this species of animal. The situation with the giant turtles was also very extreme. We easily estimate the number to be over 200 animals. We’ve never seen so many giant turtles in a pile. Although they had some space, with this number it is highly doubtful whether the area is really sufficient. The surface was monotonous and unsuitable. There was only hard, dry, bare soil with some soil, foliage and rocks. Soft soil was completely missing, there were no grass areas at all. The turtles thus have no way of foraging, grazing or nibbling on their own. From other parks and from free-range populations, we know it so that these animals can wander around a lot and look for a large part of the food themselves. It’s impossible here. Feeding was carried out at fixed points. This led to massive crowding, stress and competition. The turtles waved at each other, especially smaller animals were displaced, pulled their heads in and remained motionless. These are clear stress reactions. Whether all animals receive sufficient food is questionable in our view. Water points were also far too few. We only saw one or two small puddles. For such a large number of animals, this is absolutely insufficient. Other areas also seemed crowded. The farm was crammed, the piggies had far too little space. The bats were exposed to direct heat and tried to sleep during the day by protecting themselves with their wings. In addition, they were fed fruit in the middle of the afternoon, which clearly contradicts their natural rhythm. The park is also situated on a hillside and is hardly or not suitable for elderly people or people with mobility impairments. Unfortunately, our conclusion is clear. Anyone who values good animal husbandry should critically question this park. It gives the impression that quantity and visitor attraction are valued above animal welfare. Word to management – urgent and concrete improvement measures: Please understand this feedback as serious, sound criticism in the interests of animal welfare. The following points do not concern details, but basic requirements for responsible and contemporary animal husbandry. 1. Lemurs – fundamentally redesigning enclosures The current lemur enclosure is clearly not suitable for lemurs from a technical point of view. It seems artificial, overconstructed and obviously not oriented to the natural habitat of these animals. Basic understanding: Lemurs are not monkeys. They are specialized tree dwellers and are almost exclusively high up in the tree and bush canopies in the wild. On the ground, they are practically never seen. If lemurs sit regularly or permanently on the ground, this is a clear sign that the enclosure does not meet their natural needs. Structure of the enclosure Height alone is not enough. A lemur-friendly enclosure replicates a treetop and must be structured in three dimensions. Necessary are – real trees or thick natural trunks – many branched, horizontal branches at different heights – continuous paths at height to allow animals to avoid – no dead ends and no isolated individual structures Artificial ropes or monkey-like constructions are unsuitable for lemurs and are hardly used sensibly. They can only be used in addition, but never replace a natural, highly structured treetop. Planting and retreat The enclosure must be heavily planted. Lemurs need dense vegetation for privacy and retreat. Required are – dense shrubs, leaves and treetops – Retreats well above visitor viewing height – Areas that are not permanently visible An open, barren enclosure without privacy screen leads to stress and unnatural retreat behavior on the ground. Rest and sleeping places Lemurs need several sheltered resting places at altitude, for example – Sleeping house – protected platforms – several resting places per group so that low-ranking animals can avoid Without such retreats, there is permanent social stress. Employment and feeding Lemurs also need daily occupation to avoid apathy. Suitable are – Distributed feeding at different heights – hidden food in branch forks, leaves or wood – changing natural materials such as branches, leaves or bark A monotonous, always the same environment has a negative effect on behaviour and well-being. Recommendation It would be highly recommended to look at the natural habitat of lemurs directly in Madagascar. There it becomes very quickly clear that lemurs hide almost exclusively in the uppermost crowns and do not live on the ground. 2. Monkeys – too small enclosures and lack of employment The monkey enclosures also had a very short overall dimension and little stimulation. Giant Turtles – Improving Posture in Three Key Points In our view, the attitude of giant turtles also has fundamental flaws. Three points must be tackled together. 1. Number of animals and area The number of animals is very high. Even if at first glance there seems to be room, with this animal density it is highly doubtful that the area per animal is sufficient. Overstocking leads to stress, competition and displacement, especially in smaller animals. It’s definitely not what I was expecting – there are a handful of other animals there, but A LOT of crocs. Feeding the tortoises is 100% worth the money and so is learning about the rewilding project across islands in the Indian Ocean.
