We took an Uber door-to-door to/from our Jo-burg Hotel, rather than include the museum as part of a group tour. The area is safe, admission is reasonable (has a seniors admission price as a bonus), and the genesis and history of apartheid is well-explained. There is a nice museum shop and cafe in-site. Our only criticism is that the “flow” of exhibits is somewhat disappointing, making it hard to follow the history and—especially the timeline—of apartheid. There is a free App that you should download, which is somewhat helpful, but the numbered topics in the App videos often did not correspond to the numbers on the exhibits. The App seems to need updating. When our guesthouse host told us that we could easily spend 4 hours at this museum, we thought he was exaggerating. He wasn’t. We spent 90 minutes in the temporary Nelson Mandela exhibit alone. The building is of high architectural merit and the contents are perfectly curated. It was an intense experience, but a must see. This is a brilliant museum but could be quite daunting. He was very good at picking out key elements while encouraging us to explore further the areas we wanted to in more detail.He and the company were responsive to our requests and were helpful when we needed to make changes to our initial booking. Our tour was good value for money and we can recommend it highly. Our tour guide told us that it could take us about 1.5 hours to get through the entire museum, but after about 45 minutes we had seen plenty and were on information overload. Anyhow, this is a must see place to go while in Johannesburg, and does a great job telling the history of Apartheid. It is housed over a large area that has uneven terrain, stairs and fair bit of walking. Parts of it are on open ground and advisable to wear hats and sunscreen. A must see place for tourists to Johannesburg. Allow for about 2 hours to see the place. Entry fees payable. On site there’s a lovely restaurant, shop, and toilets. Go early to avoid the heat and crowds. A place to reflect on the history of South Africa, which we know little about, but which I think can help us reflect on the world and on ourselves. How many people still live in Apartheid, feeling different just because they were born a certain way? …. There is a lot to see and hear, we were there for approx 3.5 hrs and could have spent longer but we were on a time schedule to visit Soweto and the Mandela house. It is housed over a large area that has uneven terrain, stairs and fair bit of walking. Parts of it are on open ground and advisable to wear hats and sunscreen. We took an Uber door-to-door to/from our Jo-burg Hotel, rather than include the museum as part of a group tour. The area is safe, admission is reasonable (has a seniors admission price as a bonus), and the genesis and history of apartheid is well-explained. There is a nice museum shop and cafe in-site. Our only criticism is that the “flow” of exhibits is somewhat disappointing, making it hard to follow the history and—especially the timeline—of apartheid. There is a free App that you should download, which is somewhat helpful, but the numbered topics in the App videos often did not correspond to the numbers on the exhibits. The App seems to need updating. It really covered the horrors of what happened during apartheid. Some of the exhibits were hard to read about and go through. It’s sad that it was not that long ago this happened. These same things are continuing to happen around the world on smaller scales. I loved the Nelson Mandela exhibit. We had a guide take us through, so we did not get to go through at our own pace. But we did get to see the main points and areas. When I go back, I would just go through on my own to see the sections I missed.
