Embark on a 3-day adventure to the Danakil Depression, a unique geological phenomenon in Ethiopia. See the colorful mineral deposits, salt canyons, and geysers of Dallol, and hike to the top of the Erta Ale volcano to see the lava lake.Day 1 Fly to Semera – AhmedelaArrive at Semera Airport and meet your guide. Get a briefing about the general Ethiopian geology and the whole program. Begin your adventure to the Danakil Depression. Stop for lunch at Afdera town, where the biggest Afdera lake is and salt mining takes place. Then proceed your drive down to one of the lowest points in the world. Arrive at Ahmedela, a small settlement where the salt caravans meet before their long walk to other towns. Stay overnight in open-air camping counting thousands of stars.Day 2 Ahmedela – Dallol – Erta’aleEarly in the morning, drive to Dallol with salt domes and colorful geothermal pools. Explore this seemingly alien terrain. Visit the bizarre landscape of the salt canyons before making your way towards Erta’ale.On the way, see the arduous work of salt being extracted by hand and loaded onto the camels. About 1,200 km2 of the Danakil Depression is covered by salt. In the afternoon, proceed to Erta’ale. After a relaxed light dinner, walk to the summit crater of Erta Ale volcano lake. Visit Erta’ale volcano then return to the camp for overnight open-air camping.Day 3 Erta’ale – Semera – Flight to AddisEarly in the morning, hike back to the top of the crater to visit the volcanic activities for the second time before sunrise. After that, descend from the top of the crater down to the campsite for breakfast.After breakfast, start driving back to Semera with an optional stop at Lake Afdera for a swim in the lake and nearby hot spring. Late in the afternoon, fly back to Addis Ababa.
