See what travelers are saying Learn more Stéphane F 9 contributions 4 of 5 bubbles I visited the museum twice in February: once alone and once with family. The museum contains very beautiful pieces even if some are not really presented. The museum is crowded in the morning with groups, it is better to go in the afternoon if you are not in a group. So absolutely a visit to do for beautiful rooms and objects of Tutankhamun. So superb visit to do absolutely.ATTENTION – On the other hand when I came home I had the unpleasant surprise to see that the 2 days I went to the museum, my credit card was loaded twice for the same amount 550 Egyptian pounds on the 1st day alone and 1650 Egyptian pounds on the 2nd day with the family. I still don’t understand how they did maos both times, they took the amount twice. So be careful, besides they do not accept cash so you must pay with credit card. Once the problem could have been a mistake on their part. Twice there is clearly a will to scam. Read more Review of: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo Visited February 2025 Traveled with family Written March 12, 2025 keypeepee Chennai (Madras), India 182 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles The Egyptian Museum, Cairo — Situated in the bustling Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum is a magnificent repository of the country’s ancient heritage. Established in 1902, this grand pink building designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon is itself a piece of history. It apparently was one of the first museum’s that was built to be a museum. Do not rush through the museum, spend at least half a day, view and soak in all the details and relive the past as you see the countless, priceless exhibits. Inside thousands of artifacts chronicle Egypt’s journey from the earliest dynasties to the Greco-Roman era. The highlight for most visitors is the golden collection of Tutankhamun, alongside the royal mummies and countless statues, jewelry, and papyrus scrolls. Walking through its halls feels like travelling through time — every exhibit whispering a tale from a civilization that continues to fascinate the world.Entry Tickets cost 550.00 LE for non Egyptians. Read more Review of: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo Visited October 2025 Traveled with friends Written October 27, 2025 Muhammed A Perinthalmanna, India 17 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles Located in the heart of Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum is a treasure trove of ancient history and one of the most iconic museums in the world. Housing over 120,000 artifacts, it offers a fascinating journey through thousands of years of Egyptian civilization. The museum’s most captivating attraction is the Tutankhamun collection, including his world-famous golden funerary mask, chariots, and jewelry—items that give an intimate glimpse into the life and death of the young pharaoh. Equally impressive are the well-preserved royal mummies, including Ramses II and Seti I, displayed in a quiet, temperature-controlled gallery that adds a solemn reverence to the experience. While the building itself is historic and grand, it does show signs of age. Some display labels are outdated or limited in information, and the layout can feel a bit overwhelming without a guide. However, the sheer volume and uniqueness of the artifacts make it worth every moment. For a deeper understanding, hiring a knowledgeable tour guide is highly recommended.Verdict:The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is a must-visit for anyone interested in ancient history. Despite some modernization needs, its collections are unparalleled in richness and authenticity. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a casual traveler, this museum offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience.Rating: 4.5/5 Read more Review of: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo Visited August 2024 Traveled solo Written July 20, 2025 Daniel A Merano, Italy 327 contributions 4 of 5 bubbles the rating would have been even higher except that the museum is pitifully maintained, floor broken, paint protection sheets dangling around, dust everywhere, some objects that don’t even bear the tag with the description of what you’re admiring. Overlooking the cleanliness, general organization and order what to say, a show. For enthusiasts I recommend a guided tour because the museum is huge, for mere mortals, who perhaps have little time, I recommend heading upstairs to see the hall with the treasures of tutankhamun and its funerary equipment and the funerary masks of Tuya and Yuya. Attention Attention!! Attempting to book online E-tikets the site refers you to the purchase of electronic tickets but for the NMEC (museum of Egyptian civilization). I don’t know if it’s a bug or what but be careful! Dispassionate advice: if you can go to the museum after 11.30/12 in the morning there is an indecent line!! Read more Review of: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo Visited November 2024 Traveled as a couple Written November 6, 2024 待兼山 Osaka Prefecture, Japan 49,283 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles It is one of the highlights of Egyptian tourism. The golden mask of King Tutankhamun is here. Also, artifacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamun are in the same exhibition room. The museum is large and has many exhibition rooms, so it is best to check the location of the art you are looking for beforehand. It is a level where each exhibition room can do that much. I want to take about half a day off. Excellent. The mask of King Tutankhamun is due to be relocated to the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is scheduled to open in July this year. Read more Review of: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo Visited March 2025 Traveled as a couple Written March 29, 2025 704charles Dubai, United Arab Emirates 73 contributions 4 of 5 bubbles This has the best collection of Antiquities in Egypt. Brace yourselves for a very depressing and dilapidated museum. It is “stuffed” with some of the greatest sculptures, paintings, sarcophagi and murals in history. Are they well presented ? No it is depressing how run down the whole place is. The second floor stinks of urine, and the place is filthy and crowded unless you go very early in the morning. It could be so easy to fix without millions of $. There is also an abundance of pieces which are littered about the place which no one looks at. A sale of 10 C level pieces could raise considerable funds in a flash. Depending on your level of scholarship – you need a minimum of three hours and up. We had an excellent Russian-speaking guide who told us everything about each room and the exhibits. The queue was very long. A whole crowd had to stand for 20 – 30 minutes to get in there…The museum administration would have to do something about it… It was cool to be there and see it live. After all, it was my dream to see the pyramids, visit the museum☺️👍 Read more Review of: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo Visited January 2024 Traveled with friends Written December 28, 2024 Darrell B 17 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles Aside from the obvious mask of Tutankhamun, which must be the main attraction and is truly awesome to see in the flesh, this museum was one of the highlights of our visit to Cairo. No interactive displays and technical nonsense, just loads of artefacts crammed into an old building with decent circulation space and high ceilings. Best to get there as early as possible as there’s no AC and it does get busy, but the space is airy and light where needed. There may be a bit of dust on the exhibits and the cabinets may be a little tired, but this is a proper museum and it doesn’t need all that. All of the pomp, scale and glamour of GEM cannot outshine the volume and quality of the collection of artefacts in display here. The signage and labelling is a bit lacking, but there are plenty of local guides available at the gate if you need them – we just enjoyed wandering around under our own steam. Worth 5 stars for Tutankhamun alone! Read more Review of: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo Visited May 2025 Traveled as a couple Written May 21, 2025 Harmony F Lausanne, Switzerland 802 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is a real gem for history buffs. Despite its ancient and sometimes messy and dusty appearance, it houses one of the most impressive collections in the world: monumental statues, sarcophagi, jewellery, mummies and of course, the fabulous treasure of Tutankhamun which is still on display on 10.9.25Each room is full of incredible pieces, often exhibited without a showcase, which creates a unique proximity to history. Mood is authentic, almost out of time. We make a leap into history just by entering the buildingAllow time (and water), and if possible, visit with a guide to better appreciate the sometimes unexplained treasures. This is the museum’s black spot. A must-see, even if the new Grand Museum is being opened. And for doing both: The soul of ancient Egypt is here. So much history thousands of pieces. It would definitely take days to truly enjoy and learned from. you can get a guide to help you understand or take the trip solo and read about each one on your own time. Once inside you’ll see hundreds of beautiful giant statues there’s serval sets of stairs, so you need to be wearing comfortable shoes (tennis shoes are very comfortable) every one is wearing them so much walking. Also I’d recommend linen or cotton is most preferred, or you’ll sweat there’s no AC. Everything is wide-open amazing Egyptian artifacts. I would suggest not taking backpacks or bags you won’t be able to go in. You’ll be redirected to a very small shack where to store your items – a safety deposit box on the left side of museum which consist of a guy watching open faced filled shelves. There are no bathrooms inside. There located outside as to leave on the left side. Walking through its halls feels like travelling through time — every exhibit whispering a tale from a civilization that continues to fascinate the world. Entry Tickets cost 550.00 LE for non Egyptians. Read more Written October 28, 2025 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We travel often; it earns 5 stars. From the moment we exited “customs” in Cairo to the check in to depart Cairo, we were greeted, escorted, baggage carried, spoiled, pampered, etc. We traveled with a group of 20 with the same knowledgeable, wise and fun Egyptologist. We left the boat at 6 or 7am to beat the heat and the crowds. We returned to the boat by 1 or 2 pm for lunch. Valley of the Kings, Ramses, new GEM museum, Sphinx, pyramids, temples, statues, and a flight to Abul Symbel (a fee for this excursion). If you want to experience Egypt, I highly recommend UNIWORLD. Pradip Madgaonkar Mumbai, India 76 contributions 0 4 of 5 bubbles Pradip Madgaonkar – What a wonderful experience to visit the Egyptian Museum. Dec 2024 • Business A large museum in the very center of Cairo, for which you should set aside enough time, at least 3-4 hours, which is due to the mini-breaks during the tour, but above all because of the numerous valuable and impressive artifacts, not only those related to Tutankhamun, but many others that are scattered in small rooms. The Egyptian Museum was a fun and enriching experience, despite the pushy guides waiting outside trying to get you as their client for the day. Inside, it’s a different story — clean, organized, and full of fascinating artifacts. The highlight of the visit was definitely seeing two real mummies — not just in pictures, but right there in front of you. An unforgettable experience and absolutely worth the visit! Read more Written October 25, 2025 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Rebecca J Warrington, UK 214 contributions 1 5 of 5 bubbles A Treasure Trove of History – Truly Unmissable! Oct 2025 • Couples The Egyptian Museum is an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in ancient history. It was incredible to see artefacts that had been moved from iconic sites like Luxor Temple, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Valley of the Kings – it really helped us piece together the rich tapestry of Egypt’s past. We were especially lucky to visit while Tutankhamun’s mask and sarcophagus were on display. Although photography wasn’t allowed, seeing them in person was a truly humbling experience. The craftsmanship, the detail, and the sheer historical significance left us speechless – words genuinely evade me. There’s so much history in one place, and it’s beautifully curated. You could easily spend hours exploring and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Cairo – it’s a journey through time you won’t forget. I took my bank card visa and took Egyptian pounds out of the ATM’S in Cairo, Luxor ,Alexandra, Aswan. Locals will prefer cash over cards for market’s. I was able to take out $2000 Egyptian pounds at one time. Locals like to get American dollars as the exchange rate is better for them back to Egyptian pounds.. Its good to barter for items. And be prepared to walk away if you aren’t happy with the price.
