Begin your journey along the historic coastline of Bahrain, where you’ll meet your local cultural guide and traditional boat captain. Before boarding the boat, receive an introduction to the history of the pearl trade and the difficult conditions faced by divers in earlier centuries. Without modern diving equipment, pearl divers relied only on simple tools, courage, and incredible breath-holding ability to explore the seabed. This experience focuses on cultural storytelling and heritage exploration. No modern diving equipment is required or included. Guests will enjoy a demonstration and guided explanation of traditional pearl diving techniques.Next, board a traditional wooden dhow boat, the same type of vessel that was historically used by pearl diving crews throughout the Arabian Gulf. As the dhow moves slowly across the calm waters, enjoy beautiful views of Bahrain’s coastline while listening to stories about the golden age of the pearl trade.Learn how pearl diving expeditions could last for months, with teams of divers, sailors, and merchants working together in search of valuable oyster beds. These voyages were physically demanding and required great endurance, yet they played a vital role in supporting families and communities throughout the region.During the boat journey, learn about the traditional equipment used by divers, including nose clips, finger guards, and weighted stones that helped them descend quickly to the seabed. Watch demonstrations to see how divers prepared themselves before each dive and how they collected oysters from the ocean floor.Participate in a modern recreational pearl dive demonstration under safe and controlled conditions. Guided by experienced instructors, observe or take part in a short dive to retrieve oysters from the sea floor. While the activity is carefully managed for safety, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the challenging work performed by traditional pearl divers. After collecting the oysters, return to the boat where the shells are carefully opened to reveal whether they contain pearls inside. The anticipation of discovering a pearl inside an oyster creates a thrilling moment for participants. Even when no pearl is found, the experience of opening the shell and exploring the natural process that produces pearls is both educational and memorable.Following the diving activity, enjoy a relaxing cruise on the dhow while learning more about Bahraini culture and maritime traditions. Listen to stories of famous pearl merchants, historical trade routes, and the global demand for Bahraini pearls during the 19th and early 20th centuries.Learn about the environmental conditions required for oyster beds to thrive and how modern conservation efforts aim to preserve the Gulf’s natural pearl heritage for future generations. As the boat gently returns toward the shore, enjoy a selection of traditional Bahraini refreshments served on board. These may include Arabic coffee, sweet dates, and others.
