Embark on a 5-day trek to Mount Speke, the second-highest summit in the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon. This challenging adventure takes you to Vittorio Emanuele Peak, offering breathtaking views of glaciers, Lake Bujuku, Mount Stanley, and the Virunga National Park in Congo.Begin your journey at the Nyakalengija park gate, hiking through dense montane forest along the Mubuku River. Keep an eye out for primates and birdlife as you navigate bamboo thickets and moss-covered rocks. Spend the night at Nyabitaba Hut.On day 2, descend to the Kurt Shafer Bridge at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Continue through bamboo and heather zones, with the first clear views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Spend the night at John Matte Hut, enjoying dramatic ridge-top scenery.On day 3, cross the famous Bigo Bog on wooden boardwalks, surrounded by giant lobelias and groundsels. Pass Lake Bujuku, framed by Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, and Mount Speke. Spend the night at Bujuku Hut, ideal for acclimatization below Mount Speke.On day 4, start early for the ascent via Stuhlmann Pass, opening views toward the Congo. The final climb to the summit weaves through rocky terrain and glacial scenery. After reaching the peak, descend back past Bujuku and continue to John Matte Hut.On the final day, make a steady descent through bamboo and forest zones. Enjoy an optional lunch at Nyabitaba before exiting the park, receiving trekking certificates, and transferring onward.
