Day 1 Semera to Alalobad Hot Spring and AfderaBegin your journey in Semera, departing early in the morning. Drive northeast across lowland plains toward Alalobad Hot Spring. Make a brief stop for photos and short walks.Visit the saline hot springs and surrounding salt flats. See local Afar salt-extraction practices and traditional pastoral life. Take a short soak where safe. the water can be very hot and saline, so check with your guide. Spend 45–90 minutes at the site.Continue to Afdera (salt lake area), arriving mid/late afternoon. Visit Lake Afdera (Lake Giulietti), a large saline lake with salt harvesting and striking colors. Watch the sunset over the salt flats.Overnight in a basic lodge or camp near Afdera/nearby salt operations. Facilities are basic. bring a sleeping bag and warm layer. Enjoy a simple local dinner and ensure plenty of fluids.Day 2 Afdera to DallolDepart before sunrise to catch Dallol at sunrise, an otherworldly landscape of neon-yellow sulfur deposits, salt formations, acid ponds, and steaming chimneys.Explore Dallol’s hydrothermal fields and colorful mineral deposits with your guide. Take short walks across salt crusts and around the hottest features. Stay on safe routes, as gases and thin crust areas are hazardous. Spend 1.5–2 hours at surface sites, longer for more walking.Return toward your camp/lodge for lunch or head toward the Erta Ale base area depending on access and schedule.If visiting Erta Ale, travel into more remote desert and camp at the caravan camp at the volcano’s base or a designated Afar camp. Note the trek to the crater rim can take several hours (trek of 3–6 hrs one-way from the base camp depending on access) and is best done at night so you reach the rim at dawn. Overnight at desert camp. prepare for a cold night.If you plan to see the lava lake, rest early. the trek to the rim is often timed for night so you reach the glowing lava lake after dark. If not attempting Erta Ale, spend another night in the Dallol/Afdera area and optionally take another short excursion.Day 3 Erta Ale to SemeraIf visiting Erta Ale, embark on a very early morning/night trek up to Erta Ale crater rim to view the lava lake glowing at night/early morning.A full refund will be made based on If you will not visit EratileSafety and access Eruptions, volcanic activity, road closures, or security restrictions can make the Erta Ale route unsafe or impassable.Schedule and logistics Weather, permit delays, guide availability, or other operational problems may force us to cancel or alter the planned departure or itinerary.Capacity and government orders Local authorities can close the area or limit visitor numbers at short notice.
