Sep 2025 • Couples We visited this site as part of our group tour of Morocco. It’s an amazing place. You’ve probably seen pictures of it before but the reality of it impresses. They give you a bunch of mint to smell as you approach to overcome the smell of the tannery but it didn’t smell much when we were there. There are two areas of it. The white tubs are for first bleaching and tanning the skins and then the coloured tubs dye the leather. Considered Norwich, United Kingdom 4,623 contributions 0 5 of 5 bubbles Iconic Fez tannery doesn’t disappoint Aug 2025 • Couples Even if you don’t know the name of the place you will be familiar with the iconic image of a Fez tannery worker dancing around the coloured pots stirring stick in hand. A wonderful place to visit. First off, it smells. Your first clue is you are handed a sprig of mint on arrival to crush under your nose as you endure the tour. (To be fair, the smell is only mildly caustic but the mint is welcome nonetheless.) The tour consists of a verbal explanation of the tanning process, then a top floor view of the tanning pots, then a retail opportunity in the shop below. More shoes of more colours than I could possibly imagine. All other leather goods on sale too. A marvellous experience. Michael B 1 contribution 0 1 of 5 bubbles BEWARE of overselling by Said (“Happy”)! Jackets are worth no more than MAD 2300! Aug 2025 • Couples Beware of the tannery guides/handlers. We visited in August 2025 and were handed over to someone who identified himself as “Said” and “Happy.” He ended up selling us 2 no-label, off-the-rack leather jackets, one for a woman and one for a man. After haggling, the price was MAD 5,000 for the woman’s jacket and MAD 5,500 for the man’s jacket. In US dollars, that was $553 and $608!!! Afterwards, we looked up the price of jackets sold by the tannery and found that the label jackets sell for $150-$250, with $250 being reserved for jackets specifically tailored for an individual’s needs. To make things even worse, “Happy” asked for a “secret” tip for his generosity. Stupidly, we gave him personally another MAD 500 ($55). Admittedly, we were incredibly gullible and stupid. But let this be a cautionary tale for others who are similarly naive. The no-label jackets are probably there to be sold “off the books” (so they are not discovered by the tannery’s accountants as stolen). Jun 2025 • Friends As we were climbing up the four flights of uneven stairs to access the rooftop viewing area, our guide handed each of us a sprig of mint. I had no idea why until we reached the roof and were hit by the smell of animal hides being transformed into leather products. Wow! But if you can get past the smell, you are in for a nice informative tour. Of course after the tour, they will take you to the showroom where they will show you all sorts of products you can buy.
