Check things to see along the trail and best time to go Explore Kalandula Falls Explore Bicuar National Park Intro | Highlights | Map | Best time to go | Where to stay? | Details | Guide | Angola | FAQ | What to expect when backpacking in Tundavala Gap Tundavala Gap in Angola offers a stunning mix of breathtaking views and a bit of a workout, stretching roughly 10 kilometers with some steep sections that’ll get your heart pumping. The scenery is a real highlight, featuring dramatic cliffs and sweeping valleys that make for perfect photo ops, especially at sunrise or sunset. Getting to the trailhead can be a bit of a hassle; public transport options are limited, so you might need to hitch a ride or arrange a taxi. Compared to nearby hikes like the Serra da Leba, Tundavala feels more remote and less crowded, but it’s not as well-marked, so a decent sense of direction helps. Overall, it’s a rewarding trek, but be prepared for some logistical challenges along the way. Discover everything you want to know in the 📖  Angola Travel Guide . Best time to go: May – September Duration: 2 to 3 hours Distance: 14 kilometers Total ascent: 650 meters Get your Angola Travel Guide 💡 Top Highlights Best things to see along Tundavala Gap Angola Grab your own Travelguide for only The sheer cliff edge — The main draw: a jaw-dropping escarpment that plunges roughly 1,000-1,200 meters into the Lubango valley. Standing on the rim you get an almost vertigo-inducing view that you won’t find on gentler trails; it’s the best place to appreciate the raw scale of Angola’s highlands. Panoramas at sunrise and sunset — Early morning light or late-afternoon glow transforms the gap into a palette of golds and purples, with mist or low cloud often filling the valley below. The play of light and shadow across the escarpment is why hikers plan their timing here—photography and quiet staring both rewarded. Seasonal waterfalls and cascades — After rains, ephemeral streams tumble from the plateau and create dramatic falls down the rock face and along the valley rim. They’re not permanent, but when they flow the sound and sight of cascading water against that massive drop is stunning and distinctly different from dry-season hikes. Serra da Leba road and geological features — The hike connects visually (and often logistically) with the famous zigzag hairpin road on Serra da Leba, so you get layered views of engineered switchbacks, layered rock strata, and the escarpment’s banded geology. It’s a neat mix of natural drama and human-scale drama—great for contrast shots and a real sense of place. Highland flora, birds and local life — The plateau supports unique highland grassland and scrub, seasonal wildflowers, and skittering birds of prey along the rim; you’ll also see shepherds and small farms down in the valley. It’s less about jungle wildlife and more about wide-open, windswept biodiversity and cultural glimpses that give the hike context. Spotted a mistake or missing something? Contact me. Best Time to visit Tundavala Gap If you’re eyeing Tundavala Gap in Angola, aim for the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is way more pleasant for hiking. Daytime temps usually hover around 20-25°C (68-77°F), which is nice for trekking, while nights can dip down to about 10°C (50°F). So, pack a light jacket for those cooler evenings. Avoid the rainy season, from October to April, when you might find yourself navigating muddy trails and dodging downpours. Plus, visibility can be iffy with all those clouds rolling in. Pro tip: Start your hike early in the morning to catch the sunrise. The views are stunning as the sun breaks over the escarpment, and you’ll beat the heat of the day. Plus, fewer crowds means you can soak in the beauty in peace! JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC © Google 🛏️ Where to Stay? Angola Grab your own Travelguide for only How do I find the best and cheapest places to stay in Tundavala Gap? Personal tip: I normally search on good rating for atmosphere (for meeting people) and location (for easy exploring). Cleanliness as a bonus. Best hostels in Angola Best quality hotels in Angola What should I pack for a backpacking trip to Angola? Angola is a mix of climates and terrains, so pack for variety. It’s humid in the north with rainforests, while the south is more arid. Luanda and other coastal areas are hot and humid, so breathable clothing is key. If you’re heading inland or to the highlands, like Huambo, be ready for cooler nights. Culturally, Angolans appreciate modest dressing, especially in rural areas, so think loose-fitting clothes that cover shoulders and knees. Beaches are casual, but remember some places frown on swimwear away from the sand. Apart from this country specific advice, I have also crafted a general packing list that should help on any trip. Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of packing minimally. It’s so much easier to jump on the back of a truck or squeeze yourself into the last spot of a minibus without that supersized backpack. If you’re headed to a warm destination, leave your winter jacket at home; for colder regions, opt for thin thermal underlayers. Instead of packing your entire wardrobe, bring just three sets of clothes, as laundry facilities are available everywhere. I 💚 feedback Final Thoughts Standing at the edge of Tundavala Gap, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world—seriously, the views are breathtaking. The vibe is tranquil, almost spiritual, but don’t underestimate the wind; it can whip up out of nowhere. Bring a jacket, even if it’s warm down below. And keep your camera ready—those sunset colors? Pure magic. Just don’t rush; soak it all in. 🫱 Share this page 🙋‍♂️ Give feedback last page update: 21 November 2025 Take  Your  Backpack Home Advisor Destinations Inspiration Planning Search To sign up for the nesletter, please enable javascript STAY UP TO DATE Sign up for the newsletter Africa Algeria Angola Benin Botswana Burkina Faso Burundi Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) Cameroon Central African Republic Chad Côte d’Ivoire Dem. Rep. of the Congo Djibouti Egypt Equatorial Guinea Eritrea Eswatini Ethiopia Gabon Gambia Ghana Guinea Guinea-Bissau Ivory Coast Kenya Lesotho Liberia Libya Madagascar Malawi Mali Mauritania Mauritius Mayotte Morocco Mozambique Namibia Niger Nigeria Republic of the Congo Réunion Rwanda São Tomé and Príncipe Senegal Seychelles Sierra Leone Somalia South Africa South Sudan Sudan Tanzania Togo Tunisia Uganda Western Sahara Zambia Zimbabwe Asia Afghanistan Armenia Azerbaijan Bahrain Bangladesh Bhutan Brunei Cambodia China Georgia Hong Kong India Indonesia Iran Iraq Israel Japan Jordan Kazakhstan Kuwait Kyrgyzstan Laos Lebanon Macau Malaysia Maldives Mongolia Myanmar Nepal North Korea Oman Pakistan Palestine Philippines Qatar Russia Saudi Arabia Singapore South Korea Sri Lanka Syria Taiwan Tajikistan Thailand Türkiye (Turkey) Turkmenistan United Arab Emirates Uzbekistan Vietnam Yemen Europe Albania Andorra Austria Belarus Belgium Bosnia & Herzegovina Bulgaria Croatia Cyprus Czechia (Czech Republic) Denmark Estonia Faroe Islands Finland France Germany Gibraltar Greece Guernsey Hungary Iceland Ireland Italy Jersey Kosovo Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Malta Moldova Monaco Montenegro Netherlands North Macedonia Norway Poland Portugal Romania Russia San Marino Serbia Slovakia Slovenia Spain Svalbard Sweden Switzerland Türkiye (Turkey) Ukraine United Kingdom Vatican City State North  America Antigua and Barbuda Aruba Bahamas Barbados Belize British Virgin Islands Canada Cayman Islands Costa Rica Cuba Dominica Dominican Republic El Salvador Greenland Grenada Guadeloupe Guatemala Haiti Honduras Jamaica Martinique Mexico Nicaragua Panama Puerto Rico Saint Barthélemy Saint Lucia Saint Martin Saint Vincent & the Grenadines Sint Maarten Trinidad and Tobago Turks and Caicos Islands United States United States Virgin Islands Oceania American Samoa Australia Cook Islands East Timor Fiji French Polynesia Guam Kiribati Marshall Islands Nauru New Caledonia New Zealand Palau Papua New Guinea Samoa Solomon Islands Timor-Leste Tonga Tuvalu Vanuatu South  America Argentina Bolivia Brazil Chile Colombia Curaçao Ecuador Falkland Islands French Guiana Guyana Paraguay Peru Suriname Uruguay Venezuela Disclaimer | Privacy Policy | Cookies | About me To use these links, please enable javascript © takeyourbackpack.com | Contact To contact me enable javascript
