See what travelers are saying Learn more rbhogaraju Chesterfield, Missouri 785 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles Just a short drive away from Luxor, the Valley of the Kings consists of several rock-cut tombs which were excavated for pharaohs and powerful nobles for over 500 years. The surroundings are awe-inspiring. The place has a certain aura that will mesmerize you with its regality. There are over sixty tombs with some of the most elaborate but not all of them are open to the public. The quality of the artisanship is simply fantastic. The Tutankhamun tomb costs extra to visit so we had to skip it. The Ramesses V and VI, Seti I and II tombs are striking in their opulence and lavishness. The place is teeming with visitors and there will likely be quite a long line for the tickets. A shuttle takes you from the visitor center to the tombs entrance. Some of the more famous tombs also have long wait times depending on the season. Visiting in December, I found it was quite hot at the site. I cannot imagine how it might be in summer. There is a limit to the number of tombs you can access/visit with your ticket which is a pity. I wished we had known this before so I could have purchased tickets for additional tombs inside the precincts. The Valley of the Kings is a place where one can easily spend a half day without accounting for the lines. I would strongly urge tourists to not rush their trip Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited December 2024 Traveled with family Written July 10, 2025 Extensivetraveller99 Knebworth, United Kingdom 160 contributions 4 of 5 bubbles Took a private taxi from Luxor, took about a 30 minute drive, The tombs are fascinating, bring history to life. Your entrance ticket gets you into what ever three tombs are open that day. However at additional cost you can pay to go into an additional three well known tombs too, which I’d strongly recommend you do to.Tips- Get there early, no later then 8am as the crowds build up later, and inside the tombs get very very hot- hire a guide once in the complex- don’t let a local take a picture of you using your phone, they will expect money- most tombs were easy to walk around, a gentle slope in many cases Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited October 2025 Traveled as a couple Written October 18, 2025 Flyer29555591036 22 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles We visited Valley of the Kings with our private tour guide Mr. Mahmoud Hamdi. It was the highlight of our trip. The wealth of information he provided, helped us truly appre iate what we saw in the tombs. I would definitely recommend paying extra to visit the tomb of Ramses V and VI. It is one tomg and the colors are spectacular. As everyone has said, it is very hot even in October amd with the crowds the tombs feel even hotter inside. Do take a fan and water and slather yourself with sunscreen. An umbrella to provide shade walking between various tombs and comfortable shoes will also be good. Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited October 2025 Traveled with family Written October 24, 2025 David 202 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles The Valley of the Kings is an amazing and unique experience. A royal burial ground for the Pharaohs from over 3,000 years ago! We went on a tour organised by our travel company which included the entrance fee. An entrance ticket (750 EGP) allows you to visit three tombs and if you want extra tombs you pay extra. In the included tombs we visited Rameses IV KV2 and Rameses III KV11 and we also visited Tutankhamun KV62 (700 EGP) and Rameses V&V1 KV9 (220 EGP).All the tombs were incredible – both from an engineering view and artistic view – so colourful. The colours and decoration take your breath away! The tomb of Tutankhamun was relatively small compared to the others because he didn’t reign for very long but he was the Pharaoh who was the most well-known. It was amazing to see his mummified body still in his tomb. The tomb of Rameses V&VI was very heavily and beautifully decorated and the room where his body would have laid was decorated with such incredible detail. You could have spent hours just looking at the wall and ceiling! All the tombs we visited were truly amazing.Really a unique experience and one which mustn’t be missed if you are in the area. There is nothing like it! Words can’t explain what the tombs are like! Our guide was superb and explained each tomb before we visited them. There were no photo restrictions except no flash and by arriving early we beat the crowds who arrived as we were leaving. Payment at the entrance was by credit card – no problems. Make sure you buy extra tickets with your entrance tickets – you travel to the tombs area by golf buggy and would have to come back to buy extras. Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited February 2025 Traveled as a couple Written March 6, 2025 Nadina P New York City, New York 969 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles I wish I could give this 10 stars; I enjoyed the VoK more than the pyramids. There’s a lot more to see here (though of course you should see the pyramids too!).The standard ticket includes entrance to your choice of three tombs out of roughly 10. There are three tombs that are open with an extra ticket. The extras are:Seti I (a must-see, even though it’s expensive at 40 USD)Tut (15 USD; affordable, but overrated)KV 9, Rameses V and VI (a double tomb, and a bargain at about 5-6 USD)I would also recommend walking the two quieter trails; one starts to your left as you are approaching KV 14 (Tausert-Setnakht). You can’t enter these, but you can see the tomb entrances as they were built. They were intentionally difficult to enter because, well, the Ancient Egyptians didn’t want anyone in there. You can also see various levels of excavations, giving you an idea of how hard it is to find a tomb. You definitely have to wonder how many are as of yet undiscovered. Photos of these are attached to this post. There’s also a long staircase that leads up to a panoramic area, and there’s a gentleman there who offers to go up with you and take your photo–for a small fee, I’m sure. I’m a solo female traveler, and while I found Egypt to be safer than many places in the West, I still didn’t choose to go someplace alone with this person. Like many locals, they were also insistent that they go with you, usually because they really want money and not because their intentions are bad, but of course you can never know. If you feel comfortable or you’re with others, you can choose to do that. I’m sure it’s lovely. There’s also another quieter path, starting as you pass the tomb of Seti I. Footwear/clothing: Use your judgement. I personally think sneakers are perfect. You can wear some sort of sandal or open toed footwear if you’re okay with sand on your feet. As for clothing, it’s very, very touristy. Wear whatever you want. Plenty of people were in shorts. There isn’t much shade, so wear sunscreen, bring a sun hat, wear protective clothing, and carry a portable fan/plenty of water. Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited April 2025 Traveled solo Written April 24, 2025 Michael d 15 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles if you go to egypt, then you must visit the valley of the kings. it is an unbelievable site, but most extraordinary are the tombs, in all their splendor and craftsmanship. Ramses III and the IX are great tombs, well illustrated and beautiful to admire.,however, if you want to see stupendous, then there one tomb that must be seen, even though you need another ticket to enter, it is the tomb of Seti, be prepared to descend and then climb back stairs, but once you get there, you will forget the heat, the dust, and the other people. your breath will be taken away. our guide, Hassan of Egypt tours, could not accompany us inside, but what he had prepared us for was surpassed 100 times by what we saw.definitely to be seen, and the best part is that we were never rushed or pushed out by the attendants. we could take all our time and admire the colours of the sculpting of all the hieroglyphs. too many to count. Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited September 2025 Traveled as a couple Written October 1, 2025 Mike W 1 contribution 5 of 5 bubbles Just a little update for anyone interested in hiring a tuktuk at the West Bank of the Nile in Luxor to visit the Valley of the Kings. (January 2025)If you are staying at the East bank in Luxor, just take the public ferry to the West Bank (15EGP), which docks in front of the Luxor Museum. This ferry will leave every 30 minutes and brings you to the other side of the Nile. Very easy and cheap 😊. When you arrive at the West Bank, you have an option in hiring a taxi to bring you to the Valley of the Kings. However, it is a lot more fun to take the TukTuk. We had the pleasure of meeting Komsan. A very pleasant dude who spoke good English and very informative. He brought us to the Valley of the kings for just 200EGP (one way, so 400EGP two ways + tips) and gave us his number to contact him for when we were done. On the way to the Valley, he told us all about the places we passed by, as he is a local in the area. He even offered to let me drive his TukTuk on the way to the valley, as there isn’t much traffic on that road. Anyone who isn’t interested in haggling for a good price and wants to learn more about the West Bank, Komsan is your guys. He doesn’t have WhatsApp, but you can contact him through calling or texting this number: +201202418381.As for the Valley of the Kings, JUST AMAZING!! We ended up buying two general admission tickets and the additional tickets for Ramesses V & VI, SETI I, and Tutankhamen. In total we saw 9 tombs, and the additional tombs were really the hi lights of the Valley. Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited January 2025 Traveled as a couple Written January 10, 2025 Camila C 90 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles Don’t stop making this visit. The place is beautiful and full of stories. The ticket gives you the right to visit some tombs, but they are very crowded and it is difficult to view details or take pictures.I recommend the visit with extra entrance to the tomb of Séti I, it surprises in size and richness of details, all very well preserved, with colors and reliefs. Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited January 2025 Traveled with family Written January 24, 2025 Elaine M Belfast, United Kingdom 46 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles We took a guided tour and it was worth every penny. Access to tombs would be difficult if you have any mobility issues. Wear sensible shoes and bring lots to drink as temperatures soar. Go early in am.Staff ask for money to use toilets. We gave 1 dollar. Staff traders are fierce and you learn not to have eye contact and just say no thank-you firmly. Dogs at site but mainly they just lie in the sun and don’t bother you. Part of my bucket list. Very highly recommended. Read more Review of: Valley of the Kings Visited September 2025 Traveled with family Written September 29, 2025 Avi P 47 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles This is just incredible. There are no words to describe how amazing the tombs have been kept and preserved, it really seems like they were painted or excavated ‘recently’. It is a vast area to walk so make sure you have sufficient water and suncream as the shop inside is BEYOND expensive – it is like tourist prices around the world, plus another 20% – absolutely disgraceful. In fact, I went to buy a drink and thought the cashier was making the usual inflated price joke when he told me the price. For reference, if a water is $0.50 in Egypt, at the valley of the Kings shop/caffe, it would be around $7 (figures are made up, just a price comparison for reference of the absuridty, so come prepared). Aside from the scam-shop, it is a phenomenal experience, it is clean and well organized and, although quite expensive to enter, well worth taking a step into history. The tombs are incredible, such intricate architecture and art/drawings, it really will take your breath away. Your entry ticket allows you into all the tombs (except 3). Of the 3 additional tickets, Tutenkhamun is a must see, naturally. The other is Ramesses 1 and 2 (a single ticket) and Seti. Seti is the most expensive ticket as it is the best preserved and most ornate, however the others are beautiful too and because they are additional costs, they are FAR quieter than the rest and allows you to take pictures and appreciate the tomb better than the bustle of the general ticket-tombs. Visiting the Valley of the Kings offers a powerful glimpse into ancient Egyptian beliefs about death and the afterlife. Standing inside the vividly painted tombs, I sensed the Egyptians’ deep respect for their pharaohs and the artistry used to honor them. The hieroglyphs, rich colors, and meticulous carvings reveal a culture that valued spirituality, legacy, and eternal life. For me, the experience is humbling a reminder of humanity’s enduring desire to preserve memory through art and ritual. Oct 2025 • Couples Khalid was very knowledgeable (with a Masters degree in Egyptology) We felt this was the perfect tour hitting the best of Luxor. Bring a hat, sunglasses and wear sunscreen! The sights you will see are amazing. I really recommend a private tour because entry procedures are confusing and chaotic—these affordable guides are really nice to have especially when you get hot and tired! Your entrance ticket gets you into what ever three tombs are open that day. However at additional cost you can pay to go into an additional three well known tombs too, which I’d strongly recommend you do to. Tips – Get there early, no later then 8am as the crowds build up later, and inside the tombs get very very hot – hire a guide once in the complex – don’t let a local take a picture of you using your phone, they will expect money – most tombs were easy to walk around, a gentle slope in many cases Read more Written October 19, 2025 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Esra G 2 contributions 0 3 of 5 bubbles Center Oct 2025 • Friends • The hieroglyphs, ribbons, and colorful descriptions inside the tombs were truly stunning. Seeing these details of ancient Egypt alive gives you a journey through history. • The valley”s setting and surroundings are impressive too—a mysterious atmosphere dwells amid the mountains. • Our guide was informative, colorful to tour with stories. And the warmth and crowds that we left early in the morning • Some tomb entrances have extra fees, which can make the itinerary a little complicated. • The crowds and tourist concentration are especially evident in popular tombs. Sometimes it’s difficult to take photos and focus on detail. • Inside, the weather can be overwhelming at times, and the sense of space may decrease as we enter the narrow spaces. • Signs and directions weren’t enough everywhere; walking around without a Guide can be a bit complicated. 💡 Advice • Opt for early mornings—you’ll have less heat and avoid crowds. • Check admission fees and private tomb fees ahead of time, and no surprises in your budget. • Wear comfortable shoes; walks aren’t refreshing. • It’s advantageous to tour with a guide, as you can miss many details yourself. The scale, the detail, and the atmosphere of the tombs are truly awe-inspiring. Each tomb tells its own story through the vivid wall paintings, hieroglyphs, and incredible craftsmanship that have survived for thousands of years. If possible, visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds and enjoy the peace of the place. Standing inside those tombs is something I’ll never forget, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that connects you deeply with Egypt’s past. I have read that taxis are not allowed, and that if you are not with a tour coach you have to take the ‘tram’, which doesn’t appear to stop at places along the routes. Can anyone advise on how I get to see the lesser visited sites on the West Bank of luxor? Will I have to take the ‘tram’ and then walk? Thanks.
