See what travelers are saying Learn more 3DMatrix London, United Kingdom 829 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles Karnak Temple is definitely a must-see site that’s worth any and all hype. We visited as part of a privately arranged tour (via Nile Empire Tours). The scale and grandeur of the complex is something else. Our guide, Ibrahim (“Ibby”), was very knowledgeable with his insight and storytelling bringing history to life.Karnak isn’t a single temple, as its name would imply—it’s more like a sprawling mini city of towering columns, colossal statues, and sky reaching obelisks. We found ourselves craning our necks just to take it all in (and stumbling a few times while doing so!). The temple’s development spans multiple dynasties, and it was fascinating to see how different pharaohs added their own touches over centuries. As with the Valley of the Kings, there was something surreal about walking through Karnak Temple and being surrounded by such tangible pieces of ancient history.I’d recommend visiting in the morning to avoid the heat; we visited at midday and it got really toasty. You definitely want to wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and bring along some water. As for crowds, I got the impression that they’re constant throughout the day. I can’t stress enough how essential a knowledgeable guide is here. Without one, you’d miss the rich history and fascinating details hidden in the reliefs and inscriptions.Karnak Temple has to be at the top of your list in Luxor; it is an awe-inspiring blend of art and ancient history. You can easily fill an hour or two here, or you could linger for much longer if you’re keen on taking in every detail. Read more Review of: Temple of Karnak Visited December 2024 Traveled with family Written January 11, 2025 Extensivetraveller99 Knebworth, United Kingdom 160 contributions 4 of 5 bubbles We visited twice, during the day and revisited for the evening lights and sound show. While the light show was atmospheric in parts, I would not recommend it. You walk to four different locations within the temple, the last and longest part was a complete let down.Seeing the temple during the day with a guide was amazing. While the complex is huge, much of it has no structures. The rest, most interesting element takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to get round, and worth doing. The one aspect of the day visit that was a really nuisance was the shear number of low flying noisy microlights. These should be banned over temples etc like less noisy drones areTips:Evening light show- lady’s… it a historic monument, uneven, with NO lighting…. For god sake, leave the high heels at home !!!Day visit: – get there early, arrive no later then 7.15am….. by 9am it’s extremely crowded- hire a guide Read more Review of: Temple of Karnak Visited October 2025 Traveled as a couple Written October 18, 2025 juliajg93 Ibiza, Spain 359 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles The Temple of Karnak is a magical place and, for me, the true jewel of the temples of Luxor. It takes about an hour to see the whole complex with its corresponding breaks, as in the summer months the heat is noticeable and exhausting.Inside the complex there is a cafeteria and also several kiosks in which to buy water, although it can be brought from the outside without problems, highly recommended in peak hours of heat and sun. It’s vast and hot so take lots of water and head wear or an umbrella for shade, just be aware of others if you use an umbrella!Checkout the tallest obelisk in Egypt in the temple of Amun, get luck by circling the large Kheper scarab, view some of the 900 statues discovered in 1903 and absorb the grandeur of the Great Hypostyle Hall with all the columns ornately decorated with colourful heiroglyphics. So much to see and take in, it’s a big site so take your time and your camera!Have fun with the shaft of light in one of the dark rooms off the main temple. There are so many elements to see from the massive statues to the amazing heiroglyps – look out especially for the boats and the chariots…Its worth wandering up and down a couple of times. Although it can be busy the site absorbs lots of visitors and you can find space to be. No words can really describe the scale….go for myself and behold the wonders of Karnak. Read more Review of: Temple of Karnak Visited February 2025 Traveled as a couple Written February 11, 2025 Linto J Portsmouth, United Kingdom 33 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles I visited Karnak Temple two weeks ago. It is a must-see for anyone who enjoys history. The site is usually very crowded, so I recommend visiting with a guided tour. Without a guide, you may struggle to understand the significance of the site and gather essential information. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring, especially since you will need to use the restroom. They charge US$1 per person for restroom access, but if you use a guide, that fee can be waived.I utilized the “Get Your Guide” service, which included a hotel pickup and provided comprehensive information about the temple. There are plenty of photo opportunities, and it’s hard to believe that such a magnificent structure was built in B.C. Overall, it is certainly a must-see location. Read more Review of: Temple of Karnak Visited February 2025 Traveled with family Written February 26, 2025 Olivier Grosj Lausanne, Switzerland 2,300 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles Welcome to Karnak, the Disneyland of ancient pharaonic version. More than 100 hectares of temples, columns, sphinx and other stone surprises, all dedicated to Amun-Re and his little divine family. The favourite spot of tourists (and priests of the time)? The hypostyle room: 134 giant columns, like steroid papyrus forest. You look up, you say “wow”, then you catch a cramp in the back of the neck. Unforgettable.Next to it is an avenue of sphinx with a ram’s head (logical), a sacred lake for aquatic rituals, and statues of Ramses II who obviously had an “ego XXL” subscription.Nice little detail: this pharaonic construction site has been spread over more than 1,500 years. Yes, the Egyptians knew how to take their time… but when they finished, it was worth a visit. This place was part religious center, part administrative headquarters and part royal show-off. Over 80,000 priests, lands, riches, and divine feasts galore. In short, Karnak is ancient Las Vegas, without neon lights but with hieroglyphics. If you do not marvel, it is because you forgot your hat under the sun of Luxor ☀️😉 Read more Review of: Temple of Karnak Visited May 2025 Traveled solo Written May 21, 2025 Pradip Madgaonkar Mumbai, India 76 contributions 5 of 5 bubbles This is usually the first stop of the big three. Karnak is simply mind blowing. You have to be there. Take enough time. And have water with you. You need two hours or more to see everything. Watch out that you get to shadow places to get a rest from the Sun. don’t start doing photos at the beginning. when you do the first walk into the temple just get all the impressions period without being distracted. Go to the halls watch every pillars walks through the right where is the holy sea and walk straight until you can’t go any further because they are still archaeological working on ongoing. Then take a similar way back and start doing photos. You will have an impression by now period. When you do photos of the pillars go down a little bit to get a bit of perspective. It’s amazing that they don’t take proper care of the site. Another thing is the lack of signs that better indicate that it’s being observed. I suggest extreme care with taxi drivers and horse carriage people who keep harassing people Read more Automatically translated Written October 29, 2025 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Oct 2025 • Friends This is usually the first stop of the big three. While the light show was atmospheric in parts, I would not recommend it. You walk to four different locations within the temple, the last and longest part was a complete let down. Seeing the temple during the day with a guide was amazing. While the complex is huge, much of it has no structures. The rest, most interesting element takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to get round, and worth doing. The one aspect of the day visit that was a really nuisance was the shear number of low flying noisy microlights. These should be banned over temples etc like less noisy drones are Tips: Evening light show – lady’s… it a historic monument, uneven, with NO lighting…. For god sake, leave the high heels at home !!! Day visit: – get there early, arrive no later then 7.15am….. by 9am it’s extremely crowded – hire a guide Read more Written October 19, 2025 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Oct 2025 • Couples Visiting Luxor Temple was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my life. It absolutely deserves to be recognised as a Wonder of the World! The sheer size and scale of the temple is breathtaking. Walking through it, you’re surrounded by towering statues, intricate carvings, and hieroglyphics that are still beautifully intact. What amazed me most was the visible paintwork that’s over 3,000 years old – it’s incredible to think how well it’s been preserved. Every corner of the temple tells a story, and the atmosphere is just magical. You can truly feel the weight of history here. It’s a place that leaves you speechless and full of admiration for ancient Egyptian craftsmanship and culture. If you’re visiting Egypt, Luxor Temple is an absolute must-see. It’s not just a historical site – it’s an unforgettable experience. Read more Written October 19, 2025 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
