This bustling bazaar, with its narrow lanes, winding alleyways, and countless little shops, dates back to the 14th century. It lies in the heart of old Cairo, close to the Al-Hussein Mosque and the Al-Azhar Mosque. After sunset, the beautifully illuminated Al-Hussein Mosque makes for a truly enchanting sight. The market is a treasure trove of traditional Egyptian souvenirs — miniature pyramids and Sphinxes, busts of pharaohs, kings and queens, papyrus art, brassware, leather goods, Egyptian cotton textiles, bags, and gold and silver jewellery. Numerous cafés line the entrances and inner alleys, perfect for taking a break and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Though our group had no unpleasant experiences such as pickpocketing, it’s wise to stay alert in the crowded lanes. Haggling is part of the fun — prices are usually set high at first, so some hard bargaining is expected. The best part is that most shopkeepers remain good-natured even if you don’t end up buying anything. On some evenings, you might even come across groups of middle-aged men relaxing over hookahs and singing in the cafés tucked away in the bylanes, adding to the market’s timeless charm. Negotiations with no real purpose except to say that we paid expensively than the (mind-blowing) starting price. The worst is not this place but when you want to get out and reach one of the main streets with vehicles passing 50 cm from you, speakers placed on the items for sale that replace the auction of vendors, and a market aimed at locals rather than tourists. We also made the souks of Luxor and Aswan: incomparable to this one. It’s a real attraction. In short, a real chaos to see. Worst I have ever experienced… sludge of urine and feces on the floor like it NEVER has been cleaned …the cafe was not crowded but the market was really, really crowded. So be prepared for that…..I was not really prepared because I don’t like crowds but yeah panick attack level crowds…..This is a market so everybody is going to be haggling. Eerily exciting Read more Review of: Khan Al-Khalili Visited December 2024 Traveled with friends Written March 10, 2025 JaySethia Lagos, Nigeria 133 contributions 4 of 5 bubbles Khan El Khalili is a vibrant and bustling market in the heart of Cairo, full of energy, color, and culture. It’s a great place to shop for household items, souvenirs, jewelry, spices, traditional lamps, and beautiful handmade crafts. The market is known for its lively atmosphere and the art of bargaining — haggling is part of the experience, so don’t be shy to negotiate! Most vendors prefer cash, and card payments are rare, so it’s best to come prepared. While the area is safe overall, it’s wise to stay alert and watch out for pickpockets in the crowds. The narrow, winding alleys also lead to charming cafés where you can take a break with a mint tea or traditional Egyptian coffee, making this a must-visit spot for an authentic local experience. There is just so much to the buildings that you end up walking with heads in the air. Yes you will be hassled by some sellers but there is so much to see from antique phones, to beautiful lights but if you step out of the main drag and go through the spice market be prepared to be amazed. Workers covered in turmeric as they grind spices, sacks of peppers and mounds of delightful coloured spices……brilliant Read more Review of: Khan Al-Khalili Visited February 2025 Traveled as a couple Written February 9, 2025 M M 5 contributions 4 of 5 bubbles 1-Don’t engage with anyone unless you are actually planning to purchase goods and even then don’t show much excitement and you will have a fun time. Interesting shops (second floor has shops with cheap, fixed prices so you need to haggle there. Perfect for souvenirs)2-Never felt unsafe but keep an eye on your things at all times3-not sure if a tour guide is needed, I negotiated a pretty cheap 2 way taxi ride from hotel in Giza. It was worth it! The variety of items you can find here is incredible – from traditional crafts and jewelry to spices and textiles. However, be prepared to negotiate, as the initial prices are often triple what they should be. Even with good bargaining skills, you’ll likely still be overcharged, but as tourists, there’s not much we can do about it.The atmosphere is vibrant and authentic, and there are many nice local restaurants around where you can enjoy delicious Egyptian cuisine after your shopping adventure. Despite the pricing struggle, the experience is worth it for the unique items and cultural vibe. We were particularly impressed with the wide variety of hookahs available and purchased one to bring home, a perfect memento of our trip. The market is bustling with energy, offering everything from beautiful kaftans to sparkling gold and silver jewelry. You can also find the most vibrant lamps, perfect for adding a bit of magic to your home. After browsing the stalls, it’s a must to sit at one of the old cafes, enjoy some shisha, and just soak in the atmosphere. The vibe here during Ramadan is special, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the festive energy. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy culture, history, shopping, and a lively ambiance. The narrow streets, the lanterns, the scents of spices and coffee, everything is there for a total sensory immersion. There is everything there: souvenirs, jewelry, fabrics, handicrafts… It is a living, colorful, sometimes chaotic, but always fascinating place. Plan to bargain (with a smile) and go in the morning or at the end of the day. Special mention for traditional cafes like El Fishawy, perfect for a break amid the hustle and bustle. Must see, but better accompanied if you don’t like the crowds or you travel with children. A real dive into the history and energy of Cairo.
